Annecy presents itself as a medieval town, once part of the county of Geneva and later on being integrated into the House of Savoy. The biggest attraction the town has to offer is Le Palais de I’lle, which was used as a prison.

 

• Chateau de Montrottier

Info: Within walking distance of the gorges, in the hamlet of Montrottier, is the 13^th century Chateau de Montrottier. A one-time feudal citadel partially protected by the rugged geology around it, the chateau’s tower offers a panoramic view of Mont Blanc.

• Le Palais de I’lle

Info: This is the town’s most potent and most frequently photographed visual symbol. Built prior to the 18^th century and connected to the "mainland" of Annecy via a bridge, it resembles a miniature chateau, surrounded by water, despite its use as a prison.

• Musee Chateau d’Annecy

Info: This forbidding gray-stone monument, whose 12^th century pinnacle is known as the Queen’s Tower, dominates the resort. The chateau contains a museum of regional artifacts that include alpine furniture, religious art, oil paintings, and modern works.

• Pont de la Caille

Info: The old bridge, now a foot bridge, is right next to the new one and offers a spectacular view.
